Call for Submissions: Poetry Anthology in Honour of Sola Owonibi @ 50 (Nigeria)

Deadline: 15 March 2013

Sola Owonibi, a multiple award-winning Nigerian poet, playwright, culture activist and literary critic, teaches at the Department of English Studies, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Nigeria. With over two decades of teaching literature and language across Nigerian universities, Owonibi has authored numerous academic papers, poetry and drama texts. In 2005, his drama text Piece by Pieces (published by Rasmed) was adopted by Universal Basic Education for nationwide Junior Secondary School syllabus. In 2009, his poem ‘Homeless, not Hopeless’ from his collection Chants to the Ancestors (Kraft Books) was adopted for the 2011-2015 WAEC/NECO joint syllabus on literature. A 2011 Visiting Scholar at the Centre for African Studies, University of Florida, Gainesville, Owonibi is currently the Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Ondo State Chapter.

As part of a series of activities marking Sola Owonibi’s birthday @ 50, we are currently seeking poems that celebrate the ingenuity, consistency of vision and the genuine resilience of this notable Nigerian author, who has not only exerted substantial influence on the West African literary landscape but also discourses on Trans-Atlantic slave trade through his NGO; Network for Africa’s Redemption (NEAR). Though we appreciate poems that address a myriad of themes, we will particularly privilege, in the selection process, poems that touch on unique aspects of African folk tradition, politics and history. The basic rules for submissions are as follows:

  • Language: English only
  • Submit up to four poems
  • Each poem submitted must not be more than 50 lines long
  • In case the poem(s) have been previously published, indicate appropriately when and where they have been published
  • In few lines, provide biographical information about yourself
  • An indication of plagiarism automatically disqualifies any poem from being included in the anthology
  • Only poems that are original and match the focus of the anthology will be selected by the editors
The anthology will be co-edited by Akeem Lasisi, a multiple award-winning poet and Assistant Editor with Punch newspaper, and Tosin Gbogi, a poet and lecturer in the Department of English Studies, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Nigeria.

Please e-mail up to four poems.
